Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division Wins Best Practices Award

(Ankeny, IA) – The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (Iowa ABD) today announced it won the Best Trade/Licensee Education Program Award from StateWays magazine for education and outreach efforts during The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI).

In presenting the award, StateWays recognized the Iowa ABD for its creativity in developing an initiative that educated a large number of stakeholders across the state.

StateWays recognizes exceptional work by state agencies around the country, and this award represents the best of the best,” said Iowa ABD Administrator Stephen Larson.

“Protecting public safety and welfare during special events involving alcohol is paramount,” said Joshua Happe, Bureau Chief of Iowa ABD’s Regulatory Compliance Bureau. “Providing education to licensees selling and serving during these events is critical to achieving that goal.”

The award was presented as part of StateWays’ Best Practices Awards, which recognizes alcohol regulatory agencies across the country that lead the industry in innovation, education, and enforcement.

During the 2017 RAGBRAI, Iowa ABD provided education to over 400 entities along the route across northern Iowa. Education topics included proper licensing, outdoor service, advertising, and hours of sale.

Additionally, over 500 individuals completed Iowa ABD’s Program for Alcohol Compliance Training (IPACT). IPACT is a free, online training course for alcohol sellers and servers that focuses on preventing underage sales and sales to intoxicated persons.
